Are your Tires ready for Winter?

Posted November 23, 2016

As the weather is getting cooler in Holland, snow and rain are starting to show up in the forecast. Wet and icy roads mean your tires need to be able to grip and stay in control in slick and slippery conditions. Before the winter weather is here to stay, make sure your tires are ready!

  1. Check Air Pressure. When tire pressure is too low, it can affect the shape of the tire and how the tread interacts with the road. Carry a tire pressure gauge so you can check the pressure when your tire looks low. Gas stations often have these tools and an air compressor available for free. If you don’t have access to these tools or prefer to have an expert technician fill your tire, stop by D’s Auto & Truck Repair for a pressure check and fill-up.
  2. Check Tread. In wet and icy conditions, your tires need 4/32 of an inch of tread in order to keep you safe. Your tires are officially bald at 2/32 of an inch. Look for wear indicator bars on the tire, test tread depth with a coin, or stop by D’s Auto & Truck Repair for an inspection.
  3. Carry Supplies. Because you never know when an emergency will happen, it is good to be prepared. Carrying cat litter or road salt in your vehicle can offer much needed traction when you’re stuck in the snow.
  4. Check the spare. Most drivers don’t think about the spare tire until they need it. But just like your regular tires, the spare should have proper tread and air pressure.
  5. Consider snow tires. Snow tires are not always needed, but some drivers should consider them as an option for winter roads. Depending on your driving habits and where you live, tires designed for snow and ice can be worth the investment.

For a comprehensive tire inspection, stop by D’s Auto & Truck Repair in Holland.
